Deep Brain Reorienting
At Three Valley Wellness, we specialize in the treatment of attachment and trauma-related disorders. Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) is a transformational new treatment approach in trauma-focused therapy that targets the impact of trauma on the brain.
DBR differs from traditional talk therapy. Instead of talking about a past event, DBR therapy guides you toward recognizing the physical sensations and stored up shock energy that surfaced as the traumatic event happened, sensations that continue to keep you stuck in fear mode today. In essence, DBR enables you heal your deepest wounds.

How DBR Works
DBR is an innovative type of therapy that focuses attention on the midbrain. This is where our earliest response to a perceived threat or danger is rooted.
Right before the fight or flight response is triggered, we might notice tension in our neck or forehead, or an impulse to turn toward the threat. This is called “orienting tension,” or the way the brain instinctively prepares for a threatening situation.
This brain activity and the shock that follows can become stuck and stored in the body as unresolved trauma. This is why you might still experience the fear response years later even when no threat is present, keeping you stuck in chronic survival mode.
DBR therapy targets this pre-trauma state, the orienting tension and shock that happen just before the traumatic event triggers your emotional response. As you acquire body awareness while recalling the event, the trauma or attachment shock can be processed and healed on a much deeper level.
How DBR Can Help You
What makes DBR different from other trauma therapies is its focus on the here-and-now. Instead of spending time in therapy talking about a past trauma, DBR aims to heal the current triggers that are impacting daily life.
- You finally resolve unhealed emotional distress that had been “stuck.”
- This form of trauma therapy is more gentle, therefore less overwhelming.
- You become more present once you have processed the shock that’s been at the root of your emotional pain.
- DBR work is very grounding, which helps to establish emotional regulation as you process through the difficult material at your own pace.
- DBR sessions can also be done effectively in online sessions where you feel safe and comfortable in your own familiar surroundings.
